You may have come across the term 'pre-reg' or 'pre-registered' car or van on car dealer websites when you have been considering buying a new car.
Here at Picador, we sell a lot of 'pre-registered' Vauxhalls and our customers have come to know that they can svae you a great deal of money and represent a fantastic way to buy a new car.
We'll explain here what a pre-reg car or van is, how much you can save, and the benefits of buying a pre-registered Vauxhall from Picador.
Pre-Reg is an abbreviation of the term 'Pre-Registered'. A vehicle is described a pre-registered when it has been registered to the dealership selling it before it has been registered by a member of the public, the 'end-user' or buyer.
When a car is described as 'pre-registered' it menas that it has been registed to the dealership first. It hasn't been owned by another member of the public, but you will appear as the second-owner of the car on the log book, with the dealership listed as the first.
A pre-registered car is usally less than 6 months old and is described as having no, low, or 'delivery' mileage. Usually under 300 miles.
It is effectively a brand new car.
Pre-registered cars offer great value for money.
The dealer usually has them becasue the manufacturer has incentivised the dealer to buy a number of these cars. These count as 'registrations' of that make of car, and the manufacturers are able to report them in their sales figures. The dealer is then able to count them towards their sales targets from which they will receive a sales bonus.
As a result, they can sell these cars to the public at a dramatically reduced cost. Often cars are reduced between £500 and £3000, sometimes even more than that, but this usually depends on the make and mdoel of the vehicle.
You are basically getting a brand new car, with thousands of pounds off the MRRP or 'list price' of the car.
Many dealers have pre-registered cars available all year round, but if you want a really good selection of them, around the end of a quarter, or the start of a new one is the best time to get a wider choice.
These cars are really popular so they tend to sell very quickly once they are advertised.
ADVANTAGES OF BUING A PRE-REG | DRAWBACKS OF BUYING A PRE-REG |
Very low, or no mileage | Not a full colour choice |
No previous owners other than the dealer | Can't build the car to spec |
Reduced by £1000s of pounds off MRRP | Smaller choice of grade/spec |
Minimal devaluation in first few months of ownership | You're not the first owner on the log book |
Available for immediate delivery | The manufacturer warranty starts earlier |
1. Although there are no previous owners and you're buying a brand new vehicle, the dealership will be listed first in the log book (V5C)
2. The warranty starts as soon as the car is registered so you'll have the full manufacturer's warranty that is remaining from the point at which you buy it.
3. You can't order factory-fitted optional extras but you will be able to order any extra accessories or parts from the dealership.
4. You may not get the exact colour or spec you want, but if you're prepared to be flexible, it could save you a great deal of money.
So the only difference between a new car, and a pre-reg car is that a dealership is listed as the first owner on the V5C on a pre-registered car. That's it.
